Autonomous Operations in the digital Royal Navy

The Royal Navy had an ambition for DSEI 2019 to be the platform for the launch of their vision for the Future Navy. The wish to portray the Naval Service as a forward looking, dynamic and innovative organisation that is working in ever closer partnership with industry to deliver a Future Navy that will operate differently to protect the nations interest. We delivered the experience in partnership with Embolden.

The concept was to construct a mock-up of the twin islands of the HMS Prince of Wales which would act both as a visual statement of a resurgent RN and represent a newfound confidence in export opportunities by the British maritime defence establishment.

The Forward Island mock-up, from where HMS Prince of Wales is commanded, contained the bridge and an augmented reality experience by BAE Systems showcasing how AR has been applied to the novel presentation of information in the naval domain. The bridge also showcased the RN’s four stages of an Autonomous Operation – Understand, Find, Shape, Strike.

The flight deck was dedicated to strategic partner display plinths. Partners had the opportunity to display digital content alongside physical models and equipment linked to one of the four phases of an Autonomous Operation.

The experience hosted a combination of activities from technology demonstrators, cutting-edge equipment displays, senior stakeholder meetings for both RN and sponsor companies, workshops and informal engagement activities.
